Apprenticeship is one of the forms of organizing vocational education and training. An apprenticeship aims to prepare person for a specific type of job while meeting a company’s need for highly skilled employees. It is a model that combines on-the-job training and paid work, meaning person receives a wage throughout the training.

Vocational education and training in the form of an apprenticeship may be applied to at least 1 module of a formal or non-formal VET programme or for 2 months or more. The duration of an individual’s apprenticeship varies according to the possibilities of the vocational education and training provider. Apprentices may be new hires or current employees who need to upgrade their skills.

The aim of apprenticeship is to achieve faster economic and social inclusion, increase the economic results, productivity and competitiveness of the country's economy through vocational education and training with the participation of the employer and matching labour market demand and supply.

Apprenticeships encompass a wide variety of career paths. While they continue to be an effective training strategy in industries such as manufacturing and construction, apprenticeships are also available in fast-growing industries such as information technology, health care, energy, transportation and logistics.
